Venice. Such a magical and visually inspiring city. Here is a dreamy etching I made of St Mark’s Square looking across to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. There is a high tide and a recent downpour of heavy rain has left the Square flooded. As the sky clears, light shimmers and dazzles on the water and a gondola is steered carefully across the square towards the Doge’s Palace.

Acqua Alta (Italian for 'high water’) describes the exceptional tide peaks that mostly occur from October to January in the Venice Lagoon where they cause the city to flood.

This print is an etching and aquatint made on a copper plate. It is printed on Somerset Velvet, a heavyweight 300 gsm handmade paper from St Cuthbert's Mill in Somerset and is signed and numbered by the artist.
